See, Touch, Smell, Hear, Taste- How the 5 senses are helping children learn:

    Multi sensory teaching methods are teaching styles that use all five of human senses. It is also a “hands on” approach to teaching.  Research has proved it to be successful for children with dyslexia, but what about other children, could they benefit from it as well?

 

    Multisensory teaching methods are when we use our sight, hearing, smell, touch and/or movement when learning about a topic. The more senses that are engaged, the more effective the learning experience is and the more likely that the children will retain what they have learned. Multi-sensory methods provide an easy way for students to remember and differentiate the many skills they learn. they will have a sensory clue with which to remember what they have just learned and the new information is more likely to be stored in their long-term memory for future recall. For example, when a good speller recalls a word to spell or write, he or she actually imagines a picture of its letters in the mind; or he or she says the word and it triggers a memory of the associated sounds and the correct letter sequence.  At Jill Abrams Tutoring, we have many different methods, depending on each child, to put their senses to work. When engaging our senses with learning it causes the student to have a much better chance of remembering each skill and be able to recall that activity or “key word” or picture that helped them learn. 

 

    Children love to be able to feel ‘stuff’ when learning. This is a big part of young children’s development, but it should not cease as students grow. Incorporate ‘touch’ into all class learning activities at any age and you will see great results. Use of movement when learning benefits these children enormously. Recent research shows that if a educator can incorporate movement as part of the learning experience, these children will stay actively engaged and make good gains.   Ever wondered why you can remember a funny joke or you prefer one speaker to another at a seminar?     In addition, humor is often the key to an effective teaching method. Attaching emotion to your teaching experience can create a powerful learning experience for students and they can have fun and laugh with it.
